Reflection#1 (10/2/2019)

What Field Did You Say Are We In?

During my first lecture in TECH6104 of this semester spring 2019 Prof. Maznah asked a simple question: what is the definition of Instructional Technology? which seems a direct and an easy question for an IT teacher. It took me only few seconds to give a prompt definition as the ‘process of using technology in order facilitate teaching and learning’ as one of my colleagues answered it spontaneously, as well. Later after reading the 5 Domains of ET and What Field Did You Say Were In? and other online articles, I realized the nature of our field is deeper and can be seen from different angles of view related to our practical work and experience.

According to my previous statement I have a clear vision now that our field integration evolved during time depends on the resources availability and innovations revolution at that time. For example, honestly from my personal experience I consider myself as a veteran teacher because I have been teaching IT since I graduated from SQU in 2004, which was the first year applied in the curriculum for grade10 students. Additionally, I have used several different tools and methods during my Currier trying to utilize the resources of technology at that time to achieve the specified educational goals. Recently, I believe that what I was doing is just a reflection related to the progress of the defining the nature of our field starting from 1920 as a media until 2012 defining it as systematic process and have had the final definition published as Instructional Design and Technology. Therefore, I am glad that I have been following the right path of utilizing and integrating of Instructional Technologies to enhance the learning environment successfully.

Overall, I should continue reading more about our interesting field as well as I am enthusiastic to track any developments, trends and critical changes that might rise in the future suddenly that could facilitate the educational technology and self-learning leads to a further innovation. At the end, I am still wondering what is the nature and definition of our field is going to be over the next 10 years!

  1. Interesting that you are relating to your many years of experience as IT teacher in school. As a teacher you are thinking of using technology to make it easy for your students to learn. We do spend a lot of time thinking about the best way to support the student learning. The history of the field is interesting and it does show how we have moved from technology as a tool more into technology to support the performance of learners which require that we as teachers and designers to plan and design the learning experience integrating appropriate technology for learning to happen.
